{"id":844,"date":"2011-12-17T19:47:12","date_gmt":"2011-12-17T19:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=844"},"modified":"2011-12-17T19:47:12","modified_gmt":"2011-12-17T19:47:12","slug":"matisse-the-grid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=844","title":{"rendered":"Matisse &#8211; (The Grid)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_845\" style=\"width: 764px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/1927-Woman-with-Veil-61-x-50-cm-reduced.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-845\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-845\" title=\"1927-Woman with Veil-61 x 50 cm - reduced\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/1927-Woman-with-Veil-61-x-50-cm-reduced.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"754\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/1927-Woman-with-Veil-61-x-50-cm-reduced.jpg 754w, https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/1927-Woman-with-Veil-61-x-50-cm-reduced-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henri Matisse - Woman with Veil - 1927 - 61 x 50 cm - oil on canvas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is a wonderful example of refining cubism.\u00a0 In fact in this sophisticated painting Matisse has combined what could be viewed as conflicting considerations, the combination of cubism and flattening.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s begin with what I feel is cubism at it&#8217;s best, her forehead.\u00a0 Can you feel it projecting towards you?\u00a0 Fantastic!\u00a0 The key is the\u00a0 line connecting her eye brow with her hair which creates a sense of a plane coming forward.\u00a0 This when combined with the wonderful angle which reads as her veil, which we automatically interpret as being in front, is a superb example of the power of reduction.<\/p>\n<p>Now to the flattening, which I feel is as important as Cezanne&#8217;s spatial planes in art.\u00a0 The grid.\u00a0 This is not easily explained because it is something we feel and it may take time for you to permit yourself to accept it.<\/p>\n<p>Why did Matisse superimpose the grid on the figure.\u00a0 I think it was time for taking the next step in the evolution of spatial planes.\u00a0 In other words the presence of the figure is stronger because of the planes the grid provides.\u00a0 This is far superior to traditional modelling.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 We subconsciously and interpret space with planes and Matisse understood this.<\/p>\n<p>I should mention that Matisse didn&#8217;t abandon modelling as we see in the shading.\u00a0 The flattening is not a rejection of modelling.\u00a0 It provides another level of refinement for artists, which is challenging, and Matisse has shown us a great refinement in art which will become prominent in twentieth century painting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a wonderful example of refining cubism.\u00a0 In fact in this sophisticated painting Matisse has combined what could be viewed as conflicting considerations, the combination of cubism and flattening.
