{"id":652,"date":"2011-10-14T07:57:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-14T07:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=652"},"modified":"2011-10-14T16:39:28","modified_gmt":"2011-10-14T16:39:28","slug":"edouard-vuillard-parallels-pulls-and-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=652","title":{"rendered":"Edouard Vuillard &#8211; (Parallels, Pulls, and Integration)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_653\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Edouard-Vuillard-The-Newspaper-reduced.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-653\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-653\" title=\"Edouard Vuillard - The Newspaper - reduced\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Edouard-Vuillard-The-Newspaper-reduced.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"950\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Edouard-Vuillard-The-Newspaper-reduced.jpg 950w, https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Edouard-Vuillard-The-Newspaper-reduced-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Edouard-Vuillard-The-Newspaper-reduced-500x300.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edouard Vuillard - The Newspaper - 1910 - 34 x 55 cm - 13.5 x 22 in - oil on cardboard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is a superb example of how masters assess their compositions.\u00a0 Vuillard,as Bonnard, was interested in domestic scenes, and he shows us how any subject is an opportunity to create a sophisticated painting.<\/p>\n<p>He was noted for his wonderful shapes and patterns which are a great way to gain control of the subject matter.\u00a0 In other words not permitting the complexities of detail dictate to the artist.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, however, I will focus on his thorough assessment of the composition.<\/p>\n<p>I will begin with the curtain at the right and how it blends with the tree.\u00a0 Note how the curtain does not disrupt the rectangle of the window, which permits a rhythm of rectangles, spanning the top of the painting.<\/p>\n<p>He provided a wonderful movement with parallels.\u00a0 The curtain tie at the right and it&#8217;s parallel projecting from the mullion.\u00a0 Do you feel the movement towards the figure?<\/p>\n<p>There is a marvelous pull which excited me.\u00a0 That marvelous juicy red triangle!\u00a0 I love how sensitively and yet boldly he pulls me from the figure, very impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Vuillard has integrated beautifully.\u00a0 Lets begin with the dark vertical at the right edge and how it connects to the red stripe on the chair.\u00a0 A more subtle one is the merging of the curtain and curved back of the chair.\u00a0 Also the connection of the window mullion with another chair and the very impressive integration of the shutter and the newspaper.\u00a0 It is very subtle.
