{"id":1762,"date":"2014-02-20T06:56:22","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T06:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=1762"},"modified":"2014-02-20T06:56:22","modified_gmt":"2014-02-20T06:56:22","slug":"matisse-colour-and-pattern-within-shapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=1762","title":{"rendered":"Matisse &#8211; Colour and Pattern within Shapes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1763\" style=\"width: 748px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1939-Reader-on-a-Black-Background-92-x-74-cm-reduced1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1763\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1763\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1939-Reader-on-a-Black-Background-92-x-74-cm-reduced1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"738\" height=\"959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1939-Reader-on-a-Black-Background-92-x-74-cm-reduced1.jpg 738w, https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1939-Reader-on-a-Black-Background-92-x-74-cm-reduced1-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henri Matisse - Reader on a Black Background - 1939 - 92 x 74 cm<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">I would like to engage further with the wonderful movement Matisse provides, both with colour and with his sophisticated use of pattern within shapes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">Let&#8217;s begin with colour. \u00a0 When we focus on a colour we intuitively take in the same colour else-where in the composition. \u00a0 This creates movement which Matisse orchestrates through scale and placement, like musical notes, determining lyrical engagement. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">For example, when we look at the blue rectangles, we also sense the blues in the bouquet, as well as the vertical in the white rectangle at the right edge of the painting.\u00a0 Do you feel the circular movement? \u00a0 The little notes of blue on her shoes ensure we are not held in a tight area at the right of the composition, and instead bring us gently to the left, to engage with the wonderful movement through the warms of the figure and the small notes above and to the right. \u00a0 The same goes for the other colours as well.\u00a0 I should note that the temperature of the colours is also a factor in movement as we connect the orange with the red shapes Matisse provides the lyrical harmony through using shape motifs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">Another great consideration is using patterns within shapes.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1939-Reader-on-a-Black-Background-detail-for-posting-2.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1764\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1939-Reader-on-a-Black-Background-detail-for-posting-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span> In other words, not permitting the complexity of the subject to disrupt the harmonious relationships of the shapes. \u00a0 In the bouquet, Matisse does this beautifully by treating it as an oval<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">containing an arrangement of smaller ovals. \u00a0 The two white oval shapes containing the pattern of yellow ovals and grey markings (which match the line drawings) are a great example of pattern within shapes.\u00a0 Even the light grey areas in the bouquet with the blue markings read as ovals. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">These are considerations used by many artists and Matisse did it better than anyone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I would like to engage further with the wonderful movement Matisse provides, both with colour and with his sophisticated use of pattern within shapes.
