{"id":1565,"date":"2013-12-02T23:44:19","date_gmt":"2013-12-02T23:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=1565"},"modified":"2013-12-03T00:19:24","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T00:19:24","slug":"giacometti-shape-motifs-spatial-planes-integration-and-expressing-the-act-of-painting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/?p=1565","title":{"rendered":"Giacometti &#8211; Shape Motifs, Spatial Planes and Integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1566\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-24-x-20-in-oil-2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1566\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1566\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-24-x-20-in-oil-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-24-x-20-in-oil-2.jpg 799w, https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-24-x-20-in-oil-2-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alberto Giacometti - The Artist&#39;s Mother - 1937 - 24 x 20 in - oil on canvas<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">Giacometti was a master of composition.\u00a0 In this painting he demonstrates this with how he merged his mother with her surroundings.\u00a0 I will do my best to explain some of his superb considerations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">One of the best ways to convey a sense of space is to frame the subject, which Giacometti does beautifully.\u00a0 We are looking through a large rectangle which seems to be suspended in front of the figure.\u00a0 Can you feel the space?\u00a0 We then engage with the arrangement of rectangles which make up the structural elements of the wall behind. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">A good entry point to how Giacometti uses these supporting rectangles is with the horizontal black line running across her chest forming the tops of a series of vertical rectangles.\u00a0 These rectangles relate to another series of verticals on the wall behind.\u00a0 If you look closely you will also see how they connect or integrate with the figure, especially with the vertical rectangle integrating with the light ones on her shoulder and below.\u00a0 If you blur your eyes the integration is very strong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">Note how the lines of the wall support the figure, especially at the shoulders and that wonderful angle at the top of her head.\u00a0 The lines extending from her shoulders, stabilizing her, is magnificent integration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-detail-of-plane-for-post.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1622\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-detail-of-plane-for-post.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>There are some wonderfully subtle rectangles which are actually spatial planes.\u00a0 We have the feel of one in front her upper left arm with its top being the line extending from her shoulder (see detail)\u00a0 It is not initially apparent, but becomes strong when you become aware of it.\u00a0 There is another just below.\u00a0 I should also point out the dark vertical rectangle just above and how it provides a very sensitive support for the figure.\u00a0 Remember the intention is they are meant to be felt more than seen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-24-x-20-in-oil-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1623\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/1937-The-Artists-Mother-24-x-20-in-oil-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Her face is very complex with some wonderful cubist planes. (see detail)\u00a0\u00a0 The most noticeable are the white shapes in her hair above her forehead with the sensitive lines connecting and extending the planes onto her forehead.\u00a0 I love the vertical one in front of her neck and mouth leading up to her nostrils, connecting to a thin line leading to the left forming the top of another plane.\u00a0 The vertical also continues upward connecting to the vertical above, solidifying the figure with the background.\u00a0 At the risk of over explaining this wonderful integration, reverse the direction from the top.\u00a0 Your eye will connect to the light vertical leading down to her hands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">I marvel at the quality of the horizontal forming the bottom of her hair behind, then, at the right connecting to vertical shapes which create the feel of planes in front.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">I mustn\u2019t neglect how he relieved the strong vertical and horizontal structure with a very sensitive oblique rhythm of parallels.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s return to the white plane in her hair pointing up towards the right. Just below to the right is another small plane paralleling the direction.\u00a0 When you go to the left of her head you will find other markings echoing the movement.\u00a0 And a most important light one below her collar.\u00a0 We may not notice the oblique movement but we will certainly feel it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Kalinga,sans-serif;\">Once you train your eye to notice the complexity you come to appreciate the sophistication of his considerations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Giacometti was a master of composition.\u00a0 In this painting he demonstrates this with how he merged his mother with her surroundings.\u00a0 I will do my best to explain some of his superb considerations.
