(Cezanne and Matisse on Diebenkorn)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1033\" style=\"width: 697px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1966-Nude-on-Blue-Ground-206-x-150-cm-oil-reduced.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1033\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1033\" title=\"1966 - Nude on Blue Ground - 206 x 150 cm - oil-reduced\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1966-Nude-on-Blue-Ground-206-x-150-cm-oil-reduced.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"687\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1966-Nude-on-Blue-Ground-206-x-150-cm-oil-reduced.jpg 687w, https:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1966-Nude-on-Blue-Ground-206-x-150-cm-oil-reduced-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Diebenkorn - Nude on Blue Ground - 1966 - 206 x 150 cm - oil on canvas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This painting is a great example of a great painter permitting another to influence his work.\u00a0\u00a0 In the Matisse painting below <em>(posted on Oct. 19, 2011),<\/em> we see how he brought the background, or a spatial plane, in front of the figure&#8217;s right shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Diebenkorn used shadows to achieve the same result.\u00a0 The shadow below her chin seems to be part of the background as well, and I feel the sharp right angle is the key.\u00a0 You can also feel the sense of a spatial plane below her left breast and another beautifully considered right angle on her right arm which relates to the angle under her chin.\u00a0 (Blurring your vision may help)<\/p>\n<p>This sophisticated consideration provides the feeling the figures occupying space.<\/p>\n<p>I must also point out Diebenkorn&#8217;s superb integration of the figure&#8217;s right arm with the line leading to the bottom of the painting and how this supports her.\u00a0 I also love how her face comes forward, very impressive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1916-The-Italian-Woman-117-x-90-cm-reduced.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1038\" title=\"1916-The Italian Woman-117 x 90 cm - reduced\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donfarrell.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1916-The-Italian-Woman-117-x-90-cm-reduced-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being aware of these influences can be very beneficial for developing artist&#8217;s.\u00a0 Joining with this great tradition is a great way to develop as long as you understand the difference between being influenced and copying.\u00a0 You need to connect to the thought process and knowledge of the artists you choose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This painting is a great example of a great painter permitting another to influence his work.\u00a0\u00a0 In the Matisse painting below (posted on Oct. 19, 2011), we see how he brought the background, or a spatial plane, in front of &hellip;
